Sarah Oatley - Artist in LIne & Wash

After attending art College for 6 years,

many years ago training in Graphic Design

& Textile Art.

I have continued to work in much the same

relaxed style ever since and for more than

25 years i have I drawn with stitches to be seen.

I live lightly in County Durham with my

husband, two children, my three kitty cats

and our tortoise.

I have a passion for anything vintage,
sketching, the Northeast coastline,

coffee...and of course cake.

"My life is measured in stitches"

Working as a Artist is embedded within me.

I primarily use divine linen pulp paper, first sketching in situ, then draw with fine line pen to introduce detail and texture.

The next step is building up the layer of colour with a wash of watercolour and acrylic paint.

Finally I use vintage threads to add detail.

I prefer landscapes

and seascapes and working from nature.

I create with "Stitches to be seen"

I prefer to work in situ, first sketching the subject required, but working from photographs is possible.

I specialise in landscares, seascapes and I very much enjoy more intamate subjects.

My chosen medeum is pen and wash, mixed media and then stiching detail with delicious vintage threads.

At the moment I am working on pieces based

around the North East - County Durham where i live and North Yorkshire, where I grew up.

In January, I will have 6 pieces in The Platform Gallery, Clitheroe, Lancashire.

In February, I have a solo exhibition at The Old Station, Richmond, North Yorkshire.

I am currently painting on delicious recycled linen pulp paper.

I've returned back to using a technique I used

many years ago, painting with watercolour  before the adding pen and ink and highlighting with stitches.
